The Arsonist 02:53
The Arsonist With one eye on the future and One eye on the past You can’t see straight in the present Your crooked path’s a tell Do you- do you believe your world’s in flames? Would you- would you believe you’re the one to blame? All of yesterday’s woes and Your worries for tomorrow You’re one big knot of confusion In your fictional cruel world Do you- do you believe the world’s betrayed you or Did you- did you turn your back against the world? Stop, look, and listen Inhale the aroma of the view Stop, look, and listen Savor the flavors you add to each day Concussive beats of ill thoughts Pummel your foggy skull Illuminating questions Pop the bubble of complacency Do you- do you believe your world’s in flames? Would you- would you believe you’re the one to blame? Are you ready to taste with your eyes And see with your fingers? There’s no such a thing as small talk when you energize your senses Do you- do you believe the world’s betrayed you or Did you- did you turn your back against the world? Stop, look, and listen Inhale the aroma of the view Stop, look, and listen Savor the flavors you add to each day

By the Light of the Moon Little Boy Blue met the Man in the Moon When he gently nudged him awake Your life can change in the blink of an eye When the wolves are circling the field You and I, you and I, we race like fools across the sky You and I, you and I, we cling to the light of the moon The suspenseful moon, ascending the heavens Casts his silvery beams Oh, the surprises that wait for us now Beneath his watchful eye You and I, you and I, we race like fools across the sky You and I, you and I, we cling to the light of the moon We never, never, never have to click our heels We never, never, never have to rub a lamp We never, never, never have to leave by twelve Because we’re chasing fairies in the moonlight Chasing fairies in the moonlight The moon’s a fisherman for playful hearts And mischievous souls as well When crickets start playing their nighttime sonata We won’t be lulled to sleep You and I, you and I, we race like fools across the sky You and I, you and I, we cling to the light of the moon We never, never, never have to click our heels We never, never, never have to rub a lamp We never, never, never have to leave by twelve Because we’re chasing fairies in the moonlight Chasing fairies in the moonlight

A New Beginning I am not afraid of the challenges which lie ahead Magic nights start to unfold before jaded eyes like silver and gold I will never deceive a soul that’s why my heart has a platinum core I will never pretend to be that which I’m not- I stand as tall as a great oak A crowded mind needs emptying I’ve wide open eyes and eager ears How can I enjoy the conclusion If I’m not enthralled by the journey forward? I will never deceive a soul that’s why my heart is steady as she goes I will never pretend to be that which I’m not- I stand as tall as a great oak I am not afraid of the challenges which lie ahead Magic nights start to unfold before jaded eyes like silver and gold

Resurrection 03:42
Resurrection Twitching in my sleep Pray the lord protect our souls Keep us safe from harm Sidestepping 1-2-3 Sighing in my sleep Tearing down these walls was easy But clearing out the rubble Nearly crippled me Sit down with me in the sands of our lost time excitedly sift through abandoned dreams of past Let’s build a refuge. We can endure forever within the sturdy bones of this deserted house Let’s take the outside and let’s bring it inside, no more dark corners to shrink away from each other These days are brighter now, brighter than our yesterdays brighter now, brighter than our yesterdays Glowing in my sleep We hold our breath, leap into the unknown Exhale 1-2-3 we breathe life into this shell Sit down with me in the sands of our lost time excitedly sift through abandoned dreams of past Let’s build a refuge. We can endure forever within the sturdy bones of this deserted house Let’s take the outside and let’s bring it inside, no more dark corners to shrink away from each other These days are brighter now, brighter than our yesterdays brighter now, brighter than our yesterdays

Grace 02:52
Grace I fold my dreams into a swan Then set it down upon a pond The whispers of a pleasant wind Bring a deep peace unto this place I fought the bitterness with a sugary forgiveness I fully embrace the calm of a drowsy Saturday You and I, you and I, we glide along, we glide along with the currents You and I, you and I, we glide along, we glide along without ripples I rake my fears into a pile Jump in, playfully scatter them Bold gusts of laughter swirl like leaves Bring a deep joy unto this place I fought the bitterness with a sugary forgiveness I fully embrace the calm of a drowsy Saturday You and I, you and I, we glide along, we glide along with the currents You and I, you and I, we glide along, we glide along without ripples

There You Go Again Hey now, there you go again looking over my shoulder Hey now, there you go again slapping down what’s dear to me And I can’t stand it! And I can’t stand it! When will you ever stop to think? Why must you push me to the brink? When will you ever stop haunting me? Why must you exercise control? It says much more ‘bout you than me When will you ever stop haunting me? Hey now, there you go again looking over my shoulder Hey now, there you go again rubbing lemons into fresh wounds And I can’t stand it! And I can’t stand it! When will you ever stop to think? Why must you push me to the brink? When will you ever stop haunting me? Why must you exercise control? It says much more ‘bout you than me When will you ever stop haunting me?

What Did She Mean? The weightlessness of your whisper bobbing in my ear Moments like this come to an end Anyone can sense the drip drip of sincerity So why must I wrench every word? What did she mean? What did she mean? What did she mean by all? Caressing strokes with no purr of contentment Muscles tighten like a clenched fist Tentacles from my past are jerking me back yet here I am lashing out at you What did she mean? What did she mean? What did she mean by it all? I didn’t mean to hurt you.I was punching wildly in the air and you leaned right into me I didn’t mean to hurt you.I can’t help myself. For the love of God please let me be The shame once bequeathed to an innocent boy Tugs at these tides of emotions The ebb and flow of elation and anguish Am I worthy to receive your love? What did she mean? What did she mean? What did she mean by it all? I didn’t mean to hurt you.I was punching wildly in the air and you leaned right into me I didn’t mean to hurt you.I can’t help myself. For the love of God please let me be

Hoodwinked 03:08
Hoodwinked “Damned,” you said, that’s what I am Born to be a better man I don’t really want to be The king of all that I can see I want you. I want you out of my life There can be no reasoning with you No, no, no, no more pretend A fool I’ve been for listening To elastic tongues of slippery friends On wings of silence I shall fly Above the scattershot of lies I want you. I want you out of my life. There can be no reasoning with you No, no, no, no more pretend Is it a scam if you’re willing to be hoodwinked I don’t blame you. I’m not the fool you tried to shape You swiped the sugar bowl aside I wiped away a wasted year Sweetness is no luxury To a man with dignity I want you. I want you out of my life There can be no reasoning with you No, no, no, no more pretend Is it a scam if you’re willing to be hoodwinked I don’t blame you. I’m not the fool you tried to shape “Damned,” you said, that’s what I am Born to be a better man I don’t really want to be The king of all that I can see

Ghost of a Steam Train Heart When trains go to sleep they dream of chasing yellow moons Devouring the glistening steel rails There are phantom hobos in my head with coal dust in their eyes Busy collecting scraps to build a home Nervous pistons pumping The pressure in my chest is building fast I can hear the nimble brakemen, connecting rambling thoughts Ghost of a steam train heart What I do now on means something- rumbling down the line Ghost of a steam train heart I’m traveling all alone Loose change in my heart A suitcase full of faith The ominous unknown Straining up the hill the engineer yells for more Another shovel of coal in the box I push my plate aside because I’ve reached the boiling point I’ve been answering to others for too long Nervous pistons pumping The pressure in my chest is building fast I can hear the nimble brakemen, connecting rambling thoughts Ghost of a steam train heart What I do now on means something- rumbling down the line. Ghost of a steam train heart I’m traveling all alone Loose change in my heart A suitcase full of faith The ominous unknown

IndiePopSavedMyLife:
Listed BY THE LIGHT OF THE MOON as one of top 12 LPs of 2019

PENNYBLACK MUSIC:
This is a joyous pop album from start to finish! It contains songs such as ‘Grace’ and ‘There You Go Again’ that would easily sound at home on an R.E.M. record or 'By The Light of The Moon' and 'Hoodwinked; on a late 1980s' Go Betweens record. However it is the genius of the lyrics of ‘What Does She Mean?’ that really puts Dietz in the same bracket as Forster, McLennan or Stipe.

BABYSUE:
This is such a cool album. And we're pleased to see that this long-running underground pop band has hooked up with the fine folks at Bossy Lil' Thing to release By the Light of the Moon. The band has been active for about three decades now (yow!), but they seem to just be hitting their peak this century. The band is comprised of Wallace Dietz (vocals, rhythm guitar, composer of all songs), John Suchocki (lead guitar), Michael Click (bass guitar), and John Morand (drums). These songs instantly recall some of the more adventurous and interesting classic underground pop bands from the past including (but not limited to) The Go-Betweens, The Monochrome Set, The Chills, and even The Feelies at times. Being the music snobs that we are, all of these are obvious top favorites. So if you like any of these (or if you just appreciate good solid underground guitar pop), this album is likely to push all of your buttons just the way you like 'em pushed. Recorded using only the essential ingredients, these tracks have a nice organic sound that is refreshingly simple. Overproduction hampers so many modern pop albums, so this one instantly stands out from the ever-increasing tidal waves of technology driven techno dribble. At this point in his career, Dietz has become a true master of his craft. And this just might be the best Silent Boys album yet. Killer tracks include "The Arsonist," "By the Light of the Moon," "There You Go Again," and "Ghost of a Steam Train Heart." Highly recommended. Top pick.

DAGGERZINE:
Richmond, VA’s Silent Boys have been writing and recording low-key, jangly rock/pop music for over three decades. In the mid-late 80’s they were regularly playing the clubs in their hometown and then broke up. They returned in 1999 and have been at it ever since, and have released 6 very fine full-lengths since then (7 if you count 2004 compilation of early stuff, Progression: 1986-1991). Vocalist/rhythm guitarist/main songwriter Wallace Dietz has been in charge since the beginning writing classic, 3-minute pop tunes that can be described as ear candy (think if New Zealand’s Bats recorded for Factory Records and you’ll be in the ballpark). Lead guitarist John Suchocki adds the tasty leads while the rhythm section of drummer John Morand (who recorded this and many other bands at his RVA studio) and bassist Michael Click keep things solid and steady. Like every Silent Boys record there’s a handful of favorites and on this one it’s the driving “There You Go Again,” the very Brit sounding “What Did She Mean?” and the wonderful ‘New Beginning.” 9 songs in all and honestly not a bad tune in the pack. Please don’t ever stop Silent Boys.

JANGLEPOPHUB:
The Silent Boys have been a mainstay of potted jangly indie-pop for the past 20 years or so and produce a sound that simply refuses to let the UK, as the 80’s birthplace of indie-pop, die.
